Admissions counselor

Hello from the University of New Hampshire! The UNH undergraduate admissions team is once again looking forward to fall on our beautiful campus. Soon, students from all 50 states and more than 60 countries will make their way to UNH for the beginning of a new semester. For some, it will be a return to the connections and classes they love; for the newest Wildcats, it promises to be the start of a life-changing journey.

That could soon be you. In this blog, we talk through some of the biggest questions you might have before hitting submit this fall.

Q: What do you mean when you say that UNH has a holistic admissions process?
A: The admissions team looks at the whole applicant and not just any one test score. We’ll consider how you’ve challenged yourself both academically and personally – and how you’ll succeed at UNH.

Q: What are you looking for in the required essay?
A: The essay helps us understand who you are as a person and a student. It is a great opportunity to share your story and your point-of-view. What are you curious about? What drives you? Some students also use the essay component to tell us more about any circumstances that might’ve impacted their academic performance.

Q: What should I focus on during my senior year of high school?
A: We want to see how your senior year fits into – and furthers – your trajectory of growth. Choose courses that take you deeper into your academic interests and bring out your best as a student. Continue to be a leader in your community. Most importantly, keep working hard.

Q: What should I include in my list of extracurricular activities?
A: Whether it’s joining a pre-professional society or participating in a community service organization, getting involved is a crucial part of the UNH experience. Show us how you will contribute to our community. What sports, clubs, or experiences have been important to you? Be sure to include part-time jobs and family responsibilities – especially if they played a big role in your life outside of school.

Q: What exactly does it mean to be test-optional?
A: UNH is test-optional, which means students will be evaluated by classroom performance and do not need to submit an SAT or ACT score.

Q: What is the difference between early action and regular decision?
A: Put simply, applying by the non-binding early action deadline of Nov. 15 allows you to receive an admissions decision from UNH sooner. Some of our competitive majors, such as nursing and exercise science, also give priority consideration to early action applicants. Applying early action is also a smart move if you’re interested in some of the university’s biggest scholarship opportunities.
