We’re celebrating the UNH class of 2023 by sharing the Wildcat success stories of three members of the class!

We asked them five questions about their plans for after UNH. Hear what Emma Tobbe, Tori Denovellis and Katie Wallace  have to say about how UNH got them ready for future success!

Q: What are your plans for after UNH?

Emma:

After UNH I will be going to Bristol Myers Squibb in Devens, MA. Bristol Myers Squibb is an international pharmaceutical company. I will be working as an Assistant Rotational Engineer. In my position I get to explore three different departments within the company for eight months each. I really like the opportunity to explore different departments in industry before I settle into one position. I am starting in large scale cell culture!

Tori:

I will be pursuing my Doctorate in Occupational Therapy at the MGH Institute of Health Professions.

Katie:

After graduation, I will be working for the J.P. Morgan Private Bank as an Analyst in Boston! I interned with them the summer after my junior year and loved my experience; I’m really excited to go back. I’ll be working with families and individuals to build their wealth strategy and help them achieve their financial goals.

Q: In what ways did UNH help prepare you for your future?

Emma:

UNH did a great job preparing me for my plans after graduation. I was able to get hands-on experience starting my freshman year with the Innovation Scholars program where I was able to work in the Chase Ocean Engineering Lab researching how to build a conductivity temperature and depth sensor to correct errors in sonar mapping. Through my classes and doing research under a professor in my department, I was able to continue working in a lab and get more hands-on experience. UNH’s focus on experiential learning really prepared me for my future goals.

Tori:

UNH provided me with both the knowledge necessary to attend grad school as well as many skills, both technical and interpersonal. UNH helped me learn how to apply what I am learning in the classroom to a larger setting, as well as provided me with many opportunities, including four years of conducting research and being able to present at the Undergraduate Research Conference

Katie:

The Career and Professional Success (CaPS) office was a huge help to me in getting the internship (and eventually, job) with JPM. When I came to UNH, I didn’t really know what I wanted to do, so I started engaging with them pretty early on just to see what was out there. The career counselors helped me with everything from resumes & cover letters, to how to find an internship, to contract negotiation after I got the offer. When I went to interviews for some of the larger financial institutions, I felt really prepared for questions that could be asked and how I could demonstrate what I could bring to them because I had gone through prep with CaPS. I truly can’t speak highly enough of everything that CaPS has to offer, whether you know exactly what you’re looking for or are still trying to figure things out.

Q: What people and opportunities at UNH had the biggest impact on your post-grad plans?

Emma:

I felt so supported through my job search by the faculty in my department and by our Career and Professional Success (CaPS) faculty. I was able to meet with faculty members to discuss whether or not I wanted to go into engineering consulting or into more of a manufacturing plant. Through CaPS, I was able to perfect my resume, meet with employers and review offer letters. Also through CaPS, I got my internship at Lonza Biologics in Portsmouth, NH which really cemented that I wanted to go into industry instead of further education.

Tori:

Lori Dameron at CaPS has helped me significantly in guiding me through the application process. My honors thesis work on people with aphasia with Dr. Amy Ramage has been extremely interesting to me and made me excited to work in a field of therapy.

Katie:

Megan Turnbull (from CaPS) was huge in helping me with internship applications. Applying to the major banks requires certain strategies (that I knew nothing about), and she really helped me get to where I wanted to be. The Atkins Investment Group was also super important in helping me develop more technical skills in finance. I talked about this group a lot during interviews, and even showed my stock pitches during a few! It made a big impact.

Q: What excites you most about your future after UNH?

Emma:

I am so excited to start this new chapter in my life, although I will miss being surrounded by all the amazing opportunities that UNH offers. I am excited to read more and have more time for hobbies. I am also excited to explore opportunities that I will have through my job, such as joining the BNOW (Bristol Myers Squibb Network of Women) group.

Tori:

Being able to do something I love every day.

Katie:

I’m really excited to live in a city and work at a job I’m really passionate about. I know not everyone loves their first job out of college, so I feel really lucky that I get to work for a company who is invested in my growth and do something that excites me. And, I love Boston – I can’t wait to take advantage of everything the city has to offer. I will definitely miss Durham, though (specifically, Hop + Grind)!

BONUS: Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience at UNH?

Katie:

My experience at UNH was really made by the out-of-class opportunities I took advantage of. There are so many opportunities available for all majors, so find a club that can help you grow professionally! I also really recommend taking advantage of the alumni network. I spoke to so many graduates when I was trying to figure out what area of finance I wanted to go into, and all of them were really excited to share their experiences with me and help a younger Wildcat on their own professional journey. Establishing that shared connection is a great way to form a networking relationship. Don’t forget to make time for fun & friends while you’re still here, though. Four years goes by quickly!
