6 Ways to Be There for Your Student Applying to College

As a current senior at the University of New Hampshire, I know that taking the next step in education can be exciting but also challenging – for students and their parents alike. That’s especially true now with all of the uncertainty surrounding in-person classes and on-campus activities. Now more than ever, students need help from their parents, guardians or guidance counselors on the application, acceptance and enrollment process. I have listed a few things below that you can do to help your student have the best chance at a smooth transition to college.
Continue the conversation
With everything going on in the world, it can be easy to avoid talking about stressful things, and frankly, the college admissions process can be just that. However, it's also important to remember that applying to college is an exciting time: it promises the opportunity to further your education, build a successful future and find your passions. One of the best things you can do to help your student is remain positive and continue talking about college, even when it may be scary.
Educate yourself
The college admissions process can be tricky, and the best thing you can do is better your understanding of how it all works. A great place to start is right here!
Understand possibilities
Colleges and universities are making education more accessible than ever before. It’s important to note the number of flexible options that might be available to you, from financial aid and funding to living arrangements and completion time. Be sure to explore our range of merit-based scholarships as you get started. For example, at UNH, if you feel that your financial aid package was not reflective of your current situation, you can speak with a representative and request an appeal to possibly increase aid.
Use your UNH resources
UNH admissions has a number of helpful online resources for you and your student, from application checklists to virtual information sessions. The staff is also really accessible and happy to help answer any questions you may have, big or small. You might not know this, but there’s an admissions counselor dedicated to working with students from your region. Find yours here.
Team up with school counselors
The school counselors at your student’s high school are a great resource throughout the college application and decision process. Be sure to reach out to them and start a conversation.
