How to Make Money as a UNH College Student
How can I make money while I'm a college student? What paid summer opportunities can I take advantage of to fund my education?
Welcome back to our Financial Aid Talk blog series, where we break down important topics about college value and financial aid. We know that figuring out how you will pay for college is an important part of the college search and decision process. Earning money as a student, both during the school year and over the summer, can be a helpful way to offset some of your college expenses. Today, we are breaking down five ways you can make money as a UNH college student, from on-campus jobs to internships and paid research.

1. On-campus jobs
One way to alleviate some of your college expenses is to work a job on campus. The Federal Work-Study Program may be part of your financial aid package for UNH. To use a work-study award, students can apply for and get hired for a work-study job. During the school year, students can also apply for on-campus jobs at UNH. Many departments, such as the library, the campus recreation center and dining hire student workers.

2. Off-campus jobs
UNH students can also work off-campus jobs, whether in their hometowns over campus breaks and during the summer, or in our college town, Durham, or nearby towns like Dover and Portsmouth during the semester. Working a job is a great way to gain skills and experience for your resume.

3. Paid research opportunities
Want to get paid to design and develop your own research project? UNH students can apply for Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowships (SURF), which offer a $4,000 stipend and up to $600 in research expenses for 10 weeks of summer research on campus or at other research sites within the United States. This is a great way to pursue your academic passions and investigate a research problem while getting paid.

4. Paid internships
Paid internships are a great way to gain experience in a career field or to learn more about an industry while earning money. To find an internship, UNH students can set up an appointment with the Career and Professional Success office (CaPS) or explore Handshake, an online job and internship resource. If you land an unpaid internship, the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) FUEL Fund provides $3,000 stipends that can be used to support unpaid and/or lower-paying internships or housing-related expenses. The College of Life Sciences and Agriculture (COLSA) SOAR Fund similarly provides stipends for internships, and the Paul College Internship Opportunity Fund provides up to $2,500 stipends to help students gain career skills through high-quality internships.

5. Paid experiential learning opportunities
UNH offers a variety of other paid experiential learning opportunities. Students who complete Sustainability Fellowships at UNH spend the summer working on a paid sustainability project with a municipal, educational, corporate or nonprofit partner. The Shoals Undergraduate Research Group offers the opportunity for students to spend the summer on Appledore Island conducting research and participating in ongoing monitoring projects on topics from marine mammals to intertidal ecology. The program provides room and board, a stipend and roundtrip boat transportation for all participants.
