Future Options

Admission to the University of New Hampshire is competitive. The Admissions Office expects its first-year applicants to complete rigorous coursework with consistent "B+" or higher grades during high school in preparation for the demands of college. Most admitted students rank in the top 25 percent of their class.

Students must complete the following sequences of college preparatory coursework to be considered minimally qualified for baccalaureate admission to the University (note: some programs, particularly in the math and science fields, require an additional year of high school preparation in those areas beyond what is listed here):

  • Four years of English
  • Three years of mathematics including Algebra I, Geometry and Algebra II
  • Three years of science, two of which must be laboratory sciences
  • Three years of social sciences (including U.S. History)
  • Two years of a single foreign language (three years of a single foreign language is preferred)

What Can You Do?

If you did not receive an offer of admission you can apply again at a later time as a transfer student. The Admissions Office suggests students complete 6-8 courses (2 full-time semesters) at another accredited university, college, or community college (a minimum of 6 courses must be completed before re-applying to UNH). Students who complete a minimum of 6 courses with a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher, and no single grade below a "C", will be admissible to a general, liberal art program at UNH.

In regards to what courses to take, we suggest the following selection of coursework as these courses are likely to transfer most easily and fulfill UNH General Education Requirements:

  • English Composition
  • Mathematics (ex: statistics, finite math, pre-calculus
  • Laboratory Science (biological or physical)
  • Literature/Philosophy
  • Social Science (psychology, sociology)

Note: Math and science coursework is particularly important for students with deficits in their high school math preparation or those who wish to transfer into the College of Engineering and Physical Sciences (CEPS) or the Paul College of Business and Economics. In addition, UNH cannot guarantee access to majors with restricted space such as Nursing, Occupational Therapy, and Business Administration.
