Financial Aid Talk

How will a scholarship impact your life and college education? What scholarships can UNH students get? Welcome back to our Financial Aid Talk blog series, where we break down all things financial aid and scholarships.

Meet Anne Berg '25, an ocean engineering major who has received the Science, Math and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship, the Trustee's Scholarship and the James and Anne Twaddle Merit Scholarship during her time at UNH. Anne's scholarships alleviated the financial burden of attending UNH and gave her amazing experiences, like working in the Naval Research Laboratory at NASA's Stennis Space Center. Read on to learn more about Anne's scholarship impact!

During my internship this summer, I was able to tour the NASA rocket testing sites at the Stennis Space Center.

1. What scholarships or fellowships have you received at UNH?

During my time at UNH, I received the Science, Math and Research for Transformation (SMART) Scholarship, the Trustee’s Scholarship and the James and Anne Twaddle Merit Scholarship. I have been a recipient of the Trustee’s Scholarship since I began as a first-year student. I received the James and Anne Twaddle Merit Scholarship during my sophomore year. Then, I received the SMART Scholarship in May 2023 for my junior and senior years.

2. How have these scholarships or fellowships impacted your UNH experience?

By providing me with funding during my school year, a summer internship and guaranteed job placement after graduation, the SMART Scholarship has allowed me to fully focus on my education. It has relieved so much of the financial stress and future career uncertainty that accompanies college, allowing me to fully enjoy the rest of my UNH experience.

3. Are there any particular opportunities you’ve had that you would not have had without receiving these scholarships or fellowships?

Without the SMART Scholarship, I would not have had the amazing experience of working at the Naval Research Laboratory at NASA's Stennis Space Center this past summer. I was working in the sediment dynamics division and am excited to return to the Naval Research Laboratory after graduation.

4. What has been your favorite experience at UNH so far?

My favorite experience at UNH so far has been my experience as a resident assistant. Coming into college, I never planned or expected to be a resident assistant. However, it turned out to be an experience that not only brought me and my community the most joy, but led me to my closest friends.

5. Have you taken part in any internships or hands-on learning experiences at UNH? If so, how have they impacted you?

I have taken part in several hands-on learning experiences at UNH, namely Innovation Scholars and two undergraduate research assistant opportunities, one with Professor Nathan Laxague and the other with Professor Tracy Mandel. I participated in the ocean and environmental sensing cohort of Innovation Scholars as a first-year student. This was one of my most valuable experiences at UNH, as it developed my teamwork skills and introduced me to the entirety of the research process, from project development to presenting research. My internship experiences with both Professor Laxague and Professor Mandel introduced me to various fields in ocean engineering and inspired me to continue to explore ocean engineering.

6. Where is your favorite place on campus?

My favorite place on campus to spend time is, not surprisingly, the Chase Ocean Engineering Laboratory. I absolutely love the atmosphere there and there is no place on campus as unique.

7. What’s the best part about being a student at UNH?

Coming from a very small high school with an extremely close-knit and supportive community, I was nervous that I wouldn’t be able to find a similar community in college. Lucky for me, the UNH community is the best part about being a student at UNH. Even as I near graduation, I am confident that the UNH community will always be there for me.
