What makes a campus safe? We know that safety is among your top priorities when helping your student decide on a college to attend. Here at the University of New Hampshire, we’re proud to be consistently ranked one of the top 10 safest college campuses in the country. Today, we’re talking about how to choose a safe campus where your student will thrive. Here are some topics to consider and discuss with your student as you research colleges to attend:

How will your student ask for help on campus?
If your student needs help or is in an emergency situation, how will they reach out for help? Look into whether a school offers immediate ways to contact campus police, no matter where your student is on campus. Our UNH Police Department is known for its exceptional public safety services and students can connect to the police directly through RAVE Guardian or the uSafeUS app, right from their phones. There are also blue light emergency telephones stationed all around our campus, so students can immediately contact the police no matter where they are.

How can your student navigate campus safely at all times of day and night?
Take a look at what services are offered so your student can safely return to their residence hall from a late-night study session or club meeting. UNH offers police walking escorts for all students anywhere on campus.

How will your student be notified in an emergency situation?
Find out how and when your student will be notified if an emergency situation arises on campus. While we don’t expect emergencies on our UNH campus, we are prepared for all situations where knowledge and preparation can affect the outcome. That’s why we have a campus alert system, which all members of our community can sign up for and an action plan for an active shooter situation.

Will your student feel supported and included on campus?
Dive deeper into campus life and how your student will be supported as a whole person. UNH’s Beauregard Center is committed to working toward a more inclusive and equitable campus. UNH Psychological & Counseling Services offers resources to support student safety and well-being, including confidential counseling and outreach and prevention services. In addition, our welcoming and inclusive campus is on full display during UDay, a celebration of our community and 200+ student clubs and organizations.
