UNH business student Anna Shapiro’s tips for living on campus include hanging curtains for a home-like atmosphere and creating a designated study space in your room.

Hello new Wildcats! My name is Anna Shapiro, and I am a junior here at the University of New Hampshire. I came into UNH with an undecided major in the Peter T. Paul College of Business and Economics, but declared as a business administration major with focuses in marketing and management last year. I am a member of Kappa Delta Sorority, a Paul Employer Ambassador and a social media intern for the office of undergraduate admissions.

One of my favorite parts of UNH is the experience you get living on campus in the residence halls. I lived in Stoke Hall my first year. Living with so many other students while still having my own space made my first year at UNH so special.

However, when I was in your shoes getting ready for my first year living on campus, I was definitely still nervous about the transition. Would I feel comfortable in my new space? Would I make friends in my hall? Yes and yes. Here’s what I’ve learned along the way about building your home and community at UNH.

My top 10 tips for living on campus and making your residence hall feel like home

Tip #1: Bring photos
Although it seems like a simple tip, bringing photos is a great way to decorate your residence hall as well as remind you of the people you love from home. As a first-year student, I loved decorating with my polaroid photos, and putting pictures on a bulletin board on my desk.

Tip #2: Keep things organized
I can say from past experience that it is a lot easier to feel comfortable in a new space if it is kept clean. Make an effort to organize your space and get comfortable.

Tip #3: Pillows
Your bed is a staple of your dorm room. Bringing lots of pillows is a great way to personalize it and make it your own.

Tip #4: Bring extra lighting
Lighting can have a huge impact on the atmosphere of a room. Bringing a lamp or other forms of fun lighting is a great way to personalize your space.

Tip #5: Create a designated study space
Creating a space in your room just for studying and getting work done will definitely help you be more productive.

Tip #6: Bring curtains
Curtains are a great way to soften up a room and give it a homey vibe.

Tip #7: Bring tapestries/ flags
Tapestries or flags are a great way to add a personal touch to your room, while also adding to the design of it.

Tip #8: Coordinate with your roommate
Coordinating with your roommate is also a great idea when it comes to decorating and preparing for your shared space. Both of you like makeup? Create a makeup corner in your room! You both enjoy video games? Create a gaming station in your room!

Tip #9: Stock up on your favorite snacks
Food is good for the soul, and there's no greater comfort than knowing your favorite snacks are waiting for you in your room. It's especially great if you can get snacks that remind you of your friends, family or home. Having your favorite snacks waiting for you will definitely help you to feel more comfortable and at home.

Tip #10: Bring UNH gear!
Don't forget you're here to learn and have fun! Bringing your favorite UNH gear and decor will be the perfect addition to make your dorm feel comfortable and personalized.
