As I write this post, Durham, New Hampshire is reaching one of the warmest days we’ve had in a while. For the end of February, 55 degrees is definitely something to cheer about. Over the past couple of months, snow has covered the ground and made this the perfect time for winter activities such as snowshoeing, skiing, snowboarding and more, but this onset of warm weather has me thinking about upcoming warm weather activities such as camping, kayaking and going to the beach. Luckily for us, the University of New Hampshire is in an area that accommodates all of these activities, whether it’s the middle of winter or a warm, sunny day.
UNH’s campus is an hour from the White Mountains and the closest ski resort, so if you are interested in skiing, snowboarding, hiking, camping or rock-climbing these locations are an option for you. UNH’s Outdoor Adventures program can provide students with all the necessary rental equipment for a weekend in the mountains such as tents, sleeping bags, trekking poles, camping stoves and more, or they can provide skis for a day on the slopes. As someone who has only skied a handful of times in my life, I was so happy that Outdoor Adventures even offered trips where myself and my friends could go and learn how to ski on the weekdays and weekends.
UNH is also just 20 minutes away from Portsmouth, New Hampshire, and 25 minutes from Kittery, Maine, two locations I have grown to love during my time here. In Portsmouth, my favorite restaurant is Barrio because of their amazing tacos and guacamole; I love going to Kittery to shop at their outlets. In addition, Boston, Massachusetts is just an hour away, so it’s super easy to visit for the day. We also have an Amtrak train stop right on our campus that will take you to North Station. Ever since I was young, my favorite thing about Boston is the sports, so I love taking the Amtrak train from campus into North Station for a Celtics or Bruins game. Finally, UNH’s campus is only 25 minutes from beaches on the Atlantic Ocean, so as the warm weather approaches in the coming weeks and months, it will be a popular place for myself and my friends to travel to. Our favorite things in Hampton are the restaurants and the arcade right on the boardwalk. From experiencing this amazing area over the past four years, I can assure you that with so many locations within just an arm’s reach, you will never be bored.
Being able to attend a school that is in such an incredible location is one of the many things I love about UNH. Living here has not only given me a chance to stay in a location different from the one I was raised in, but I have also had a chance to visit so many new places in this area that I had never been to previously, like Portsmouth and the White Mountains. I am so thankful for UNH and all that it has taught me over the years and will never forget the amazing memories I have made here.
