Your UNH College Search Checklist
What should I do to prepare for college in my junior year? How do I start planning for college during the search process?
If you’re a rising junior in high school, this post is for you. We get it. The college search process can be overwhelming. Here at the University of New Hampshire, we want to make it simple for you. Today, we’re walking you through our rising junior college search checklist, including six easy steps you can take this summer and next year to stay on track with your college search.

1. Talk with your counselor
Schedule an appointment with your high school counselor and start talking about your college future.
Be sure to discuss what types of colleges you’re interested in:
- How far away from home are you comfortable being?
- Do you want to attend a larger school or a smaller one?
Brainstorm what majors you might be interested in:
- What are your favorite classes?
- What subject areas excite you?

2. Talk with your parents or guardians

3. Stay focused
Colleges look for consistent academic performance, so make sure to keep your grades up and take classes that challenge you.

4. Do what you love
Colleges also look for students who spend time on what they’re passionate about. Make sure to stay involved over the summer and throughout the school year, whether through extracurriculars, volunteering or a job.

5. Consider the ACT or SAT
Test scores are optional at UNH, but you may still want to consider signing up for the ACT or SAT to see if your scores will benefit your application.

6. Plan your visits
Junior year is the perfect time to start thinking about what schools you want to experience in real life. Visiting campus is the best way to know if a school is right for you, so start planning your trips to schools and signing up for guided tours. If you’re not able to travel to a school, see if you can tour virtually.
