From dining hall hacks to ways to meet your new best friends, today we're sharing our top five pieces of advice for your first year of college. For each tip, watch one of our First Year Student Prep videos to learn from current UNH students!

1. Make DIY dining hall meals if you're a picky eater.

Are you wondering what you'll eat in the dining hall as a college student? If you're a picky eater or used to preparing food for yourself, rest assured that there are tons of ways to customize your own meals in our UNH dining halls. Watch a UNH student teach you how to make a favorite meal as a picky eater!

2. Be open to meeting new people.

UNH students meet their friends in a wide variety of ways. Keeping your door open in your residence hall room and attending residence hall social events are great ways to chat and connect with your neighbors. Introducing yourself to the students sitting next to you in class or forming a study group are perfect ways to meet other students in your major. Joining one of UNH's 200+ student clubs and organizations will help you meet friends who share your hobbies and values, allowing you to connect on a deeper level. Watch UNH students interview their peers about where they met their best friends.

3. Take advantage of campus recreation resources.

UNH's Hamel Recreation Center (Hamel Rec) offers weights, stationary workout equipment, workout classes, a bouldering wall and so much more! Take advantage of the ability to stay healthy and move your body with our campus recreation resources. Watch a speed tour of Hamel Rec!

4. Explore the area beyond campus.

Discover what nearby towns and fun day trips are close to your college campus. Here at UNH, we're 20 minutes from dining, shopping and the arts in Portsmouth, New Hampshire and 30 minutes from a beach day in Rye, New Hampshire. You can also hop on the train at our campus Amtrak station and travel under 90 minutes to Boston, Massachusetts or Portland, Maine. Watch a UNH student's trip to Portsmouth, New Hampshire.

5. Pack for college like a pro.

Wondering what to bring when you move into college? Make sure to bring decor that helps your residence hall room feel like home and that shows off your personality. Prepare for the different seasons with fans for the warmer months and blankets and layers for the colder months. Create a list to make sure you don't leave anything behind! Watch this video to learn what to bring (and what not to bring) when you move into UNH.
