students walking around Boston

Wildcats in Boston.

So, you want the best of college life on a traditional New England campus and easy access to the region’s top cities? Current students will tell you that the University of New Hampshire’s middle-of-everywhere location connects them to the best of both worlds – living on our beautiful, postcard-worthy campus and zooming into nearby Boston, Massachusetts by train in less than an hour from UNH’s own Amtrak station.

And Wildcats love Boston, whether they’re interning at a top tech, media or finance company, participating in our signature Semester-in-the-City program, or just spending a perfect weekend day meandering from the North End to Fenway. As you put a campus visit to UNH on your summer calendar, consider adding a day trip or weekend in Boston to your travels to experience for yourself what having all this right here means for your college future.

Here are a few of our favorite things to do in Boston.

The Freedom Trail
If you like history, you’ve come to the right place. Relive the story of the American Revolution on a historic 2.5 mile walking tour featuring 16 nationally historic landmarks including museums, churches, graveyards, parks and a ship. Learn more about The Freedom Trail

Boston Red Sox Game
Whether you’re visiting in the spring, summer or fall, catch a baseball game at the iconic Fenway Park – the oldest stadium in Major League Baseball. Better yet, take a tour where you’ll learn the history behind “America’s Most Beloved Ballpark” including the curse.

TD Garden
The train from UNH to Boston drops you right off at North Station located directly underneath TD Garden. Not only is the arena home to some of the biggest sports teams like the Boston Celtics and Bruins, it’s also where several award-winning artists such as Justin Bieber, Lizzo and many others perform. If you’ve got the time, we recommend trying to catch a concert or game!

Quincy Market
Need a quick bite to eat? Look no further than Quincy Market, which has a wide variety of foods to choose from. Everything from pizza and hot dogs, gelato and smoothies, lobster rolls and clam chowder.

Institute of Contemporary Art
Overlooking the Boston Harbor in the Seaport is Boston’s ICA Museum – the destination for new art and ideas. Throughout the year, there are several visual art, music, film, video and performance exhibitions so make sure to check the calendar.

The New England Aquarium
Immerse yourself in all of the colors of the sea and discover a variety of marine animals from jellyfish and turtles to seals and penguins. The aquarium also partners with Boston City Harbor cruises to give visitors a front-row seat to one of the world’s most fascinating animals: whales. Learn more about the New England Aquarium.

Newbury Street
Located in Boston’s Back Bay is every shopper’s dream: Newbury Street. Lined with 19th century Brownstone buildings plus hundreds of shops and restaurants, there’s something for everyone to enjoy.

The Boston Common
Nestled in the heart of the city is the Boston Common, America’s oldest public park. Centuries ago, it was the place where America celebrated its independence from Great Britain. Today, it serves as a stage for both free speech and public assembly.

SoWa Market
If you have time, SoWa Open Market is a great place to check out – especially through late spring and early fall. Every Sunday, local vendors come and sell an array of jewelry, clothing, home goods, photography, ceramics and more. There are even food trucks and farmers and bakers selling goods, too. And it’s all outdoors!

Wildcat tip: If you’re planning on visiting Boston, make sure to map out your trip ahead of time so you can make the most of it. The majority of places we mentioned are easily accessible either by the MBTA, walking or Uber.
