Completing Your Credentials

Final high school transcript

All enrolling students must send UNH their final official high school transcript by July 1. Admission to UNH is conditional pending satisfactory completion of high school coursework.

Advanced Placement (AP) credit

UNH recognizes the academic rigor of the Advanced Placement (AP) program. We will grant course credit for appropriate scores for students who take AP examinations. Official score reports from the College Board must be sent directly to the Office of Admissions. You will be notified of credit awarded. Learn more about AP score equivalencies. www.unh.edu/admissions/academics/ap.html

International Baccalaureate credit

For students taking International Baccalaureate (IB) courses or working on the full diploma, UNH awards eight transfer credits for each IB higher-level examination score of 5, 6, or 7. Official score reports must be sent to the Office of Admissions. You will be notified of credit awarded.

Previous college credit

If you are enrolled in college-level courses as a high school student, have your official college transcript sent to the Admissions Office. You will be notified of any credit awarded. If you plan to take college coursework prior to your arrival in the fall, you may contact the Office of Admissions for suggestions on relevant coursework to take in order to receive credit.

SAT-Subject Test credit

The SAT foreign language test may be used to satisfy the foreign language requirement of our Bachelor of Arts degree and selected Bachelor of Science degree programs. Scores vary by test. If you received a score indicated below and are required by your major to take a foreign language, please notify the dean’s office of your college division.

Changing majors

At UNH, it’s okay if you don’t know what you want to major in right away. About 75 percent of our students change their majors at least once during the course of their time here. To request a change of major prior to Orientation, contact the Admissions Office by e-mail or by postal mail, and we will review your application for the change. Please note that the University cannot guarantee approval of all requests.
You will also have the opportunity to change your major during June Orientation.

Deferrals

Admitted students who would like to postpone enrollment at UNH for a semester or a year can request a deferral. Requests for deferrals must be put in writing and sent to the Admissions Office. Deferrals are granted for personal reasons—time off to work, to travel, or for medical reasons, among others. (Students who choose to defer will not be able to transfer coursework from other colleges to UNH, with few exceptions.)

Important: Please note the following action items if you plan to defer your admission...

  • If you know you will be deferring your admission, do not send in an enrollment deposit.
  • If there is a chance your plans may change, an enrollment deposit must be received by the May 1 deadline to guarantee a space in the class and to get housing.
  • If a deferral is approved, a form will be sent with the approval letter to reinstate admission.
  • Students who defer for a year must remember to complete the FAFSA by March 1 of the year they will be enrolling (for fall).
  • Students who defer for only one semester will have their Financial Aid package modified to indicate only one semester of need.
